Geographical Position

The municipality of Paleros is located on the NW tip of the state of Aitoloakarnania. Has an area of 106. k.m2. (Sq. km) The coastal area is washed by the Ionian sea, the mainland borders with the municipalities of: Anaktorio, Αlyzias, Μedenon. In short distance from the coast of the municipality are the islands of: Lefkas, Κalamos, Meganissi etc.The geographic structure of the area of the municipality contains a large variety.

In the municipality exists the mountainous region of Serekas ( 1.171 m. ), which is a part of the 3 large Akarnanian mountains. There are also more small and big mountains. Of interest also is the rocky coastal area facing the Ionian sea, the salt lake between the municipality and Lefkas, the wetlands of Voulkaria lake.

Churches

The area exhibits many churches and chapels. From these it is worth noticing the Monastery of St. Demetrius, which is located in the foothills of Paleros Sereka mountain and was built around the 16th century. The church is one-room stone basilica with a semicircular apse and a pitched roof tiler. The Holy Monastery of St. Demetrius was Stavropegic that ruled directly by the Patriarchate. During the Ottoman played an important role in the effort for liberation from Turkish domination and maintained lechokomeio and workhouse for the homeless in the area. The Church of St. Demetrius is decorated, but the paintings have been partly destroyed by fire and moisture.

In the bush there is the Monastery of Panagia Romvis or Rompiatissas which is founded on solid rock giant. Sites

  • Castle Kechropoulas: saved a pillar and the double enclosure of Acarnanian Ancient City. Also surviving relics of ancient structures.
  • The Archaeological Site of Sterna, which is the highest peak over the old slope. Preserved remains of ancient walls and two observatories on two hills opposite the site of Sterna.
  • The Castle of Grivas located a few kilometers before the bridge of Lefkada to the point where the road Vonitsa – Lefkada crossed the road to slope. In this position the years of Ottoman Muslim monastery was therefore called “Tekes”.
  • The Venetian Castle of the slope under the name “Saint George”, built in the late 17th century.   • The castles of the lateral positions and Fagia Trikorfo, which probably formed part of the fortification of Sterna.

Exploring the area of ​​the slope of the peninsula, the visitor will encounter the German caves Dorfpeld connects with those of Homer’s Ithaca. One can also visit the Paleohori Pogoni and Old Slope where there are old buildings such settlements.
